How the decoding actually works
Three decoders and a per-camera profile, which is what makes broad camera coverage possible.
Raw is not one format. Every manufacturer writes its own, they change between camera generations, and a file ending in .nef from 2009 has little in common with one from last year. Memora works through three decoders in turn, so a file that defeats the first is handed to the next. Coverage across more than a thousand bodies comes from that layering rather than from any single library.
Colour is the second half of the problem. Sensor data on its own is not an image, and turning it into one needs a profile describing how that particular camera sees. When Memora meets a body it has not encountered before, it fetches the matching profile by sending nothing more than the make and model string, then caches it locally. Your photograph is never involved in that lookup.
Everything after that stays on your machine and stays reversible. Adjustments are written to the catalog as data, never baked into the file, so the raw on disk is the same bytes your camera wrote. Export is the step that produces a new, edited image.
Wide on the way in, deliberately narrow on the way out
It is worth being precise here, because plenty of software is vague about it. Memora opens a very wide range of files: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF and AVIF alongside the raw formats listed above. Export is narrower on purpose, covering JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP and BMP with EXIF preserved, or a byte-for-byte copy of the original.
There is no conversion back into a raw format, and none into HEIC, AVIF or DNG. If your workflow needs a DNG archive, Memora is not the tool for that step.

Which RAW formats does Memora open?
Sensor-level decoding covers CR2, CR3, ARW, NEF, RAF, ORF, RW2, PEF, SRW, DNG, 3FR, IIQ and RWL, spanning more than a thousand camera bodies. HEIC, HEIF and AVIF files are viewed through their embedded preview rather than decoded from sensor data.
Why does my photo look different from my camera's JPEG?
A raw file has no single correct appearance. Memora applies its own baseline rendering using a colour profile matched to your camera model, which is fetched once by make and model and then cached. Expect a neutral, camera-accurate starting point rather than a copy of your camera's in-body processing.
Does editing change my original file?
No. Every adjustment is stored as data in the local catalog and re-applied when the image is displayed. The raw file on disk is never rewritten, so you can undo anything at any point, including months later.
What can I export to?
JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP and BMP, with EXIF such as date, camera, lens, exposure and copyright preserved. You can also export an untouched byte-for-byte copy of the original. There is no export back to a raw format, to HEIC or to DNG.
Is a fast machine required?
No. Decoding runs on the processor and benefits from more cores, while the AI features use DirectML or CUDA when a suitable GPU is present and fall back to the CPU otherwise. Thumbnails are cached after first generation, so browsing stays quick on modest hardware.
Does RAW support cost anything?
No. Raw decoding and the core editing sliders are part of Memora Free, with no time limit and no subscription.
