When you import photos, Memora's AI examines each image and creates a mathematical "embedding" — a 512-dimensional vector that captures the visual meaning of the photo.
2. Your Search Becomes Math
When you type a search like "dog playing in snow", the AI converts your text into the same mathematical space as your photos.
3. Find Matching Photos
Memora finds photos whose embeddings are mathematically similar to your search. The closer the match, the higher the photo ranks in results.

What the ranking actually does
Useful to know, because it explains both what search is good at and where it will let you down.
Three signals decide the order of your results. Visual similarity carries the most weight, since it compares your words against what the picture actually shows. The automatic caption Memora wrote for each photo contributes next, which helps when a scene is easier to describe than to recognise. Plain keyword matching fills in the rest, covering filenames, camera metadata and any tags you added yourself. Blending all three is why a vague query still returns something sensible rather than nothing.
Indexing is the step that makes this possible, and it happens once per photo. Add a folder and Memora works through it in the background, generating the numeric description and the caption. From then on a search is a comparison against numbers already on disk, which is why results appear as fast as you can type even on a library of several hundred thousand images.
Hardware changes the speed of that first pass, not the outcome. DirectML drives most modern GPUs, CUDA is used if you install the NVIDIA pack, and everything falls back to the processor when neither is present. Captioning in particular is CPU-bound and slower than search itself, so a big first index is a good moment to leave the machine alone for a while.
Where it will not help
Worth knowing before you rely on it.
- Counting and reading. "Three people on a bench" or "the sign that says closed" are not the kind of question this model answers reliably. Describe the scene instead.
- Photos only. Videos live in your library and play, but the AI analyses still images. There is no semantic search across video.
- English queries. The model was trained on English text and works best with it.
- Un-indexed files. Anything added seconds ago is not searchable until the background pass reaches it.
- Windows only. There is no macOS, Linux or mobile build.
For the searches this does not cover, other tools in Memora usually do: smart albums group a library by category without any query at all, and filters narrow by rating, camera, lens and date.
AI photo search questions
How does AI photo search actually work?
A local model turns every indexed photo into a list of numbers describing what it shows, and turns your typed query into a comparable list. Memora then ranks your library by how close the two are, blending visual similarity with the automatic caption and any keywords. Nothing is matched on filename or folder, which is why it finds pictures you never labelled.
Do my photos or my searches get sent to the cloud?
No. The model runs on your own CPU or GPU, and neither the images nor the text you type leave the machine. Search keeps working with the network disconnected once your library has been indexed.
Do I have to wait for indexing before search works?
Yes. Memora analyses photos in the background after you add a folder, and a picture becomes searchable once it has been through that pass. A large archive takes a while on the first run, then stays quick, because only new files need analysing.
How precise is it?
Think concept level rather than object detection. Describing a scene, a subject, a setting or a mood works well. Asking for an exact count of objects, or for text inside an image, sits outside what this kind of model does reliably. Queries are written in English.
Do I need a graphics card?
No. Memora uses DirectML on a compatible GPU by default and CUDA if you install the NVIDIA pack, but it falls back to the CPU when neither is available. CPU indexing is slower rather than lower quality.
Is semantic search part of the free version?
Basic natural language search is included in Memora Free, with no time limit. Auto-Boost search, searching by a person's name and searching by location are Pro features.
