Why the catalog is the part that traps people
Leaving Lightroom is rarely about the editing. It is about the years of sorting.
A Lightroom catalog is a SQLite database. Everything you have done to organise your archive lives in that one file: which frames you starred, which you flagged red, every keyword you typed. The photos themselves are just files on disk, and they carry almost none of that with them.
Most alternatives therefore ask you to start again, or to export XMP sidecars and hope the next tool reads them properly. Memora takes the shorter route and reads the .lrcat file directly, pulling your ratings, colour labels and keywords across in one pass. Your images are indexed where they already live, so nothing is copied, renamed or reorganised on disk.
Reading is all it does. The catalog is opened without being written to, which means Lightroom carries on exactly as before and you can run both applications against the same library while you decide. Migrating stops being a one-way door, and that changes how much of a decision it is.
What to expect, and what not to
- Rendering differs. Memora develops raw files with its own decoder and per-camera colour profiles. A photo will look camera-accurate, not identical to Lightroom's render of the same frame.
- Offline drives stay offline. Because files are read in place, images on a disconnected external drive will not display until it is plugged back in.
- Lightroom Classic catalogs. The .lrcat format is what Memora reads.
- Windows only. No macOS, Linux or mobile build exists.
- Export is not raw. Photos export to JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP or BMP with EXIF preserved, or as an untouched copy of the original.

Lightroom import questions
Does Memora change my Lightroom catalog?
No. Memora opens the .lrcat file read-only, pulls what it needs and leaves the catalog exactly as it found it. Lightroom will not notice anything happened, and you can keep using both against the same library.
Do my photo files get moved or copied?
No. Memora indexes your images where they already sit on disk. Folder structure, drive letters and file names stay as they are, which also means an external drive needs to be connected for those photos to display.
What organisation comes across from Lightroom?
Ratings, colour labels and keywords carry over with the import, so the work you have already done sorting the library is not thrown away.
Will my photos look identical to how they look in Lightroom?
Not necessarily. Memora decodes raw files with its own three-tier decoder and per-camera colour profiles, applying its own baseline rendering. Expect a competent, camera-accurate starting point rather than a pixel match for Lightroom's interpretation of the same file.
Can I run Memora and Lightroom side by side?
Yes, and for most people switching gradually that is the sensible route. Since nothing is moved and the catalog is untouched, there is no point of no return to plan around.
