If you searched for a sample HEIC file, you almost certainly want one of two things: a real .heic image to test how an app, script, or website handles Apple's photo format, or a way to understand what these files actually are before you commit your whole photo library to them. The short answer

A HEIC file is just a normal image saved in a more efficient container than JPEG. What is a HEIC file, exactly?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's file wrapper around an image compressed with HEVC (H.265), part of the broader HEIF standard. Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads have saved photos as HEIC by default when the camera is set to "High Efficiency."

The reason the format exists is size. A HEIC photo is typically about half the file size of the same shot saved as a high-quality JPEG, with equal or better visual quality. A single HEIC file can also hold more than one image, which is how Live Photos, bursts, and depth or portrait data ride along inside one file.

A few practical distinctions worth knowing before you test with a sample:

  • HEIC vs HEIF. HEIF is the standard; HEIC is Apple's specific implementation of it. In everyday use the terms are used interchangeably, and the file extension is usually .heic or .heif.
  • HEIC vs JPEG. Same picture, smaller file. The trade-off is compatibility: not every older app or website can read HEIC yet, which is exactly why test files are so useful.
  • HEIC is not RAW. A standard HEIC is a finished, compressed photo. Apple ProRAW is a separate, much larger format, though it is also delivered inside the HEIF family.

Two cautions before you grab the first result:

  • Know what the file contains. A random sample from the web may carry leftover EXIF metadata — GPS coordinates, device model, timestamps. That is harmless for testing but worth checking before you reuse the image anywhere public.
  • Match the file to your test. If you are validating an app's HEVC decoder, a plain single-image HEIC is enough. If you are testing Live Photo or depth handling, you need a multi-image sample, and most generic download sites do not label which is which.

How to make your own sample HEIC file

For testing, generating your own sample beats downloading one because you control exactly what is in it. The two easiest routes:

  1. Shoot one on an iPhone. Open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose High Efficiency. Every photo you take is now a .heic file. Transfer it to your computer with a cable rather than AirDrop or Messages, both of which can silently convert the image to JPEG on the way out.
  2. Convert an existing image. On a Mac, open any JPEG or PNG in Preview and use File → Export with the format set to HEIF to produce a HEIC. This gives you a known-provenance sample without needing a phone.

On Windows
