What actually makes a photo look like film

Colors sit in narrower, more predictable lanes: skin stays warm, greens go slightly yellow, blues cool off. On top of all that sits grain, an even texture that comes from the emulsion itself rather than from sensor noise.
Chasing a single slider labeled "film" rarely gets you there. What works is recreating each of those traits deliberately, in an order that lets you judge the effect as you build it.
Work from the RAW file, not the JPEG
A camera JPEG has already been sharpened, contrast-boosted, and color-corrected in ways that fight the faded look you are after. Start from RAW and you inherit the full tonal range the sensor captured, which is exactly what a convincing fade needs. Build the tone curve first
Contrast is where most film looks live or die, so set it before you touch color. Pull the black point up a notch until the darkest area of the frame reads as deep gray rather than absolute black. Ease the brightest highlights down so nothing screams pure white. A gentle S-curve with lifted feet, high shadows and slightly tamed highlights, gives you that classic faded matte base.
Resist the urge to crush contrast back in later. Flatter files feel more analog, and you can always add a touch of local contrast to the subject if it goes too soft.
Color is the part that sells the effect
Once the tones sit right, color does the heavy lifting. Three-way color grading is the fastest route: warm the shadows toward brown or green, and cool or warm the highlights depending on the stock you are imitating. Portra-style warmth wants amber highlights and slightly green shadows; a cooler cinematic feel wants teal shadows against warm skin.
HSL controls let you fine-tune from there. Nudge greens toward yellow, desaturate blues a little, and hold skin tones steady so faces do not drift orange. Small moves win here. A few points of hue shift reads as a chosen look, whereas a heavy hand reads as a broken white balance.
Add grain, halation, and a vignette
Texture is the finishing layer, and it belongs last so it sits over your final tones. Add film grain until the frame has an even, fine tooth, then back it off if it starts to look like sensor noise instead of emulsion. A subtle vignette pulls the eye inward the way an older lens naturally would. Halation, the soft red bloom around bright edges, is the detail most people cannot name but instantly recognize from film; a light amount around blown highlights adds a lot of authenticity for very little effort.
